Cooking Tips

There are small things that you can do to make a big difference when you are cooking . Here I will outline some advice that may be helpful in improving the flavour of what one would like to serve with pride and love.

Tip #1: Bread preparation

I do not think that there is really anyone who does not enjoy the smell of his own freshly baked bread. Just imagine waking up in the morning and be greeted by its sweet scent. Just to throw a bag where everything is ready in the evening, add water, and start up the breadmaker. This reduces the preparation time significantly when making bread. Proceed as follows:

Prepare all dry ingredients in a single plastic bag, and do not forget to write on the bag what needs to be added (such as oil, eggs or  other liquids(water/milk)).

Then you can store  prepared bread (mixes) for over a month and thus avoiding the daily stress of preparation.

Simply put out, see what needed to be added, and, if necessary, ferment and bake. Finished :) This also saves you a lot of money.

Tip #2: Make mashed potatoes with bicarbonate

Mashed potatoes are a quite common side dish and understandably quite popular. My favourite is creamy while also airy and light. It derived from a lot of failed attempts and heartbreak as I could never get it to taste quite right. This continued until I tried making it with bicarbonate. That made such a difference! Nowadays, I always do with bicarbonate, butter and cream and, of course, spices.

So you just have to test this with bicarbonate! It gives you lovely fluffy mash. Undoubtedly, your dinner guests will try to steal this trick from you.

Take a little more then 1 teaspoon for 4 persons.

Tip #3: Crispy skin on chicken

Crispy skin is tasty on chicken but can be difficult to accomplish.

Rub just the chicken with baking soda before putting it in the oven to get the crispy skin.

Tip #4: Don’t forget salt to your baking

When you bake cake, always add a pinch of salt. It really makes a big difference in flavour.

Tip #5: Make your own vanilla sugar

You can make your own homemade vanilla sugar.

Divide a vanilla bean. Put it in a jar. Turn on the icing. Shake and let stand for a week. Then you have a good homemade real vanilla sugar.

Tip #6: Salt in chocolate desserts

When you are using chocolate in a dessert, add a tiny bit of salt. This brings out the flavour of the chocolate.

Tip #7: Baking soda when omeletting

Want to get your omelets airy? Add a pinch of baking soda to the batter to your omelette.

Tip #8: Water in oven when making bread

When baking bread, always have a bowl of water in the oven when you turn it on. This will make your bread steam baked and you get a much richer bread.

#8…interesting! I’ve never heard this. Should I leave the water in the oven the whole time the bread is baking?
